Biblical Nuggets: Deacon

Deacon: Derived from the New Testament Greek word for servant or minister, the office of deacon has always been one of service to the congregation and its leaders, presbyters, priests and bishops. Following a rite described in Acts 6 in which “seven men of good standing” were appointed, deacons have traditionally been ordained. In the Pastoral Epistles of the New Testament, deacons function in ministerial work, often in service to the poor. In the *Post-Nicene church, deacons assisted in worship but would not preside in the eucharistic service. Deacons serve in Protestant denominations in a wide variety of roles. Among Baptists, for example, the board of deacons functions much as the board of elders in other fellowships.

Scripture Reading: Galatians 1:1-10

Literal Translation: Galatians 1:1-10

Salutation (1-5)

Apostleship/Paul’s Authority (1-2)

1 Paul, an apostle not from men nor through man but through Jesus Christ and God, the Father, the one raising Him from the dead 2 and you (all) the brother with me, to the churches of Galatia.

Paul’s Message (3-5) : Gospel Presentation

3 Grace to you (all) and peace from God, the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, 4 the one giving Himself for our sins, so that He might deliver us from the present evil age according to the will of our God and the Father, 5 to whom be the glory forever and ever, amen.

Denunciation (6-10)

A. Crisis in the Church – Perversion of the Gospel (6-7)

6 I wonder that you (all) are transferred/exchanged side quickly from your (pl.) calling by grace of Christ to another gospel in this manner 7 which is not another; except there are some disturbing you (all) and wanting to pervert the gospel of Christ.

B. Issues (8-9)

8 But even if we or an angel out of heaven would preach/announce a gospel opposed to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before and just now again I say if anyone to you preaches/announces a gospel opposed to the one you received, let him be accursed.

Paul’s Motive

10 For now do I comply with men or the God or do I seek to please men? If I still pleased men, then I was not a bond-servant of Christ.
